The idea of altering a book or book page is not new. Traditions range from Palimpsest used by 11th century monks to preserve parchment to Grangerism which was used in the Victorian days to create scrapbooks (founder James Granger) to The Humament by Tom Phillips who challenged himself to alter an entire book. Today’s art community uses book / page altering in more ways that I can describe. I started using this technique in art teaching and found it’s a great way to embellish a document, story or even scripture.
My decades as an art educator and now Director of Children’s Church has lead to thoughts on what art can bring to this educational setting. Next comes my philosophy of Biblical Education which seeks to elevate the experience of children’s church. My philosophy, in short, is: Scripture, Scripted, Scaffolded, Substitutions (of materials is O.K.), NOT Standardized, Strategized Pre-Planning, Summary of Scripture, Shared Evidence of Learning, Significant and Memorable Hands On.
This lesson is scaffolded for teachers who have time constraints but want that elevated experience for their students. Included are numerous examples, options from two pre-created story in a story from Genesis to a template to start from scratch. Each of the areas listed in the previous paragraph is completely fleshed out in the 16 page document. There are two printable story in a story examples and a complementary watercolor painting tutorial. I think you will have fun with this lesson!
