Some kids find collage making perplexing. They see the obvious: attaching papers to a surface but lack the ability to form a plan. My experience has led me to understand that they need to use their metacognitive skills at a higher level. They need to plan, make decisions along the way and evaluate how their decisions are working out. Sometimes they need to utilize strategies that they have learned before but they don’t recall them.
I have 4 great collage resources that will lead students through the steps of making collages. In addition to each lesson, you will receive two pages of collage info to help you – definitions, strategies, how to modify and even free mini posters on cutting & gluing best practices! Each lesson comes with a black and white background of patterns (based on images I took while taking a walk) that can inspire the collage plan or be used in the collage. Additionally, each lesson includes a thank you mini poster! Give some structure to your collage lessons so the students can feel comfortable to experiment! Sounds strange, but true!
