What a profound visual! The cave is dark and limits the perception of the students. The students have no idea what they are missing. Upon exiting the cave, the students are free to learn about the true nature of the world, discover all the knowledge that is available to them and how fulfilling having knowledge can be. Darkness equals a poverty of the mind (and perhaps the wallet) that may haunt them for a lifetime.
Teaching kids how to see, learn and appreciate the world can turn their black and white mental screen to vivid color! I have a couple of resources that can help students build their visual acuity and become more visually literate. They are: Realistic/Abstract/Nonobjective – examples of and how to render the subject in all three styles. Another resource is Art In Everyday Life – a real conversation starter in becoming aware of one’s environment.
Try these great lessons in art and visual literacy!
You can find these resources on Teachers Pay Teachers. Thank you!
